FFLA Scholar of the Year Awards Information and Webform

The Florida Foreign Language Association, Inc. is seeking applications from the best and brightest of your ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE foreign language scholars for its 2018 Scholar of the Year Award competition.

 A maximum of one (1) each of the following awards will be given:

·         Elementary School Scholar:  a 5th grade student who excels in all areas and has shown outstanding achievement in Foreign Language Study.  Winner receives a non-monetary award and certificate.

·         Middle School Scholar:  an 8th grade student who excels in all areas and has shown outstanding achievement in Foreign Language Study.  Winner receives a non-monetary award and a certificate.

·         High School Scholar: a senior who excels in all areas and has shown outstanding achievement in Foreign Language Study.  Winner receives a plaque.

·         High School Ambassador: a senior who excels in all areas and has studied at least 3 years of a second language and two years of a third language.  At least one of these languages must have been studied formally in a school in Florida.  Winner receives a plaque. 

·         College/University Scholar:  a college or university student who excels in all areas and has shown outstanding achievement in Foreign Language Study.  Winner receives a plaque. 

 Requirements:

  • Students must be in their FINAL year of college, high school, middle school or elementary school.
  • Students must have studied a foreign language in Florida.
  • Teachers who wish to nominate students must be FFLA members in good standing

 APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Applications must be completed using the webform on the http://www.ffla.us website.  Teachers must log on, navigate to the student awards area, click on the link there and submit all materials. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.   

All applicants must submit the following:

   A complete application webform which includes a 50-word biography highlighting their success in foreign language study and the essay topics and student samples mentioned below. Click here: 

   Verification of “scholar” status.  Most recent report card, transcript or note from school official noting grades in language classes and overall average or GPA

   A letter of recommendation from the nominating foreign language teacher (for the Ambassador Award, include a letter from each foreign language teacher,  BOTH TEACHERS MUST BE FFLA MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING). The teacher must nominate the student with this form:

   High school/College/University:  A 250 word essay by the nominee, in the foreign language, (in English for Latin and in a 2-3 minute Quicktime movie for ASL) on the topic:  “What Studying a Foreign Language Means to Me”.

   Middle School: A 150 word essay by the nominee in English OR with the exception of Latin students, a 150 word essay in the target language (in a 1 ½-2-minute Quicktime movie for ASL) on the topic:  “What Studying a Foreign Language Means to Me”

   Elementary School:  3 samples of student foreign language work.  May be written, audio (mp3 only) or video (Quicktime only)

ANNOUNCEMENT:  The committee chair will notify the teacher via e-mail by the end of June. The awards will  be presented to the students at the FFLA 2018 Conference.
