SLA research and ACTFL have been calling for 90% target language and a move away from explicit grammar instruction. The resounding question here is “How?!” This session focuses on an effective, fun, interactive answer to this question that a growing number of language educators are adopting and finding to be a powerful approach.

This dynamic, high-energy workshop bridges the gap between Second Language Acquisition research and the classroom. Through participatory demonstrations, manipulatives, visuals and interactive activities, teachers will practice techniques that transform the student in to the curriculum. Teachers will be introduced to planning and assessment strategies that naturally promote student language acquisition and intrinsic motivation.

This hands-on workshop aims to share how the use of technological tools such as Google Classroom combined with other applications help teachers to be more efficient by reducing grading time and having immediate data to modify instruction. These tools also enhance students' accountability by making them responsible of tracking assignments and creates safe environment where all students can actively participate. Evidence of students' performance tasks, the application of the data, and grading systems will be discussed to analyze how these tools could be used to improve efficiency. This intervention has been developed with great success in a Magnet Middle School.
How to engage your students using fun and technology tools.

Technology In this presentation the audience could learn and practice using interactive technology applications to engage their students in their classes. Teachers will get students attention and could use those even if the student is absent. The participants will have a variety of tools to do a fun class at the same time that the students are learning and review new or previous knowledge. The participants could make a different class giving the students the desire to be in their classroom every day.
Time to Tackle Taboo Topics!

Should teachers discuss all topics? This has been controversial throughout the years as researchers' findings have been conflicting. Traditional teaching has always recommended avoiding controversial topics until curriculum review suggested an emphasis on more provocative topics. With the emergence of the communicative approach, teachers found themselves more inclined to discuss taboo topics. What are the most effective ways to discuss all topics without making students feel uneasy? How to avoid any censorship while being culturally aware of differences/levels of comfort? Participants will be invited to contribute their experiences, finding ways together to create a better environment for language learners.

Communication Strategies/Testing

For the first part of our presentation, we will offer ideas on how to implement interactive and communicative activities in the foreign language classroom. We will then offer strategies to guide speakers from responding with simple phrases in the target language to utilizing true communication strategies. This will entail building the skills of the speakers to comprehend information in the target language and then to ask relevant questions for clarification and/or details. The speakers will then learn to formulate multi-sentence cohesive thoughts, which automatically include relevant details such as background information and explanations.

For the last part of our presentation, we will discuss how to effectively create and grade communicative oral exams. Attendees will learn the appropriate features of a communicative oral exam and will be presented with options for different formats. We will share a variety of rubrics and explain how to evaluate student oral production concretely and objectively.

Course accessibility: Creating ADA Compliant Instructional Materials for Japanese Courses using available resources

Japanese Inclusion Under Section 504 and Title II of the ADA, students with documented disabilities have the right of equal access to educational opportunities and resources. Instructors are also responsible for ensuring our course content is accessible to all students. It is extremely important, yet challenging, to provide alternate ways of accessing course information and materials to meet students’ unique set of needs. In this presentation, I will explain how to develop or change old instructional materials into ADA compliant material using available resources. This presentation aims to help Japanese educators prepare for the transition toward compliance with ADA accessibility requirements.
Language Variation at a Region in China and Its Implications for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Chinese The purpose of this study was to examine Chinese among different society levels in Tianjin, China. Drawing the data on structured quantitative research methods, this study provides pedagogical implications for teaching Chinese as a foreign language in U.S. schools. Presenters will provide a PowerPoint defining instruments, data collection, setting, and data analysis methods. Then, they will lead a discussion about the importance and scarcity of language variation studies that help in designing new foreign language curricula. Attendees will reflect on the study methods and brainstorm ideas for creating foreign language curricula based on the practical uses of foreign.

Your students are interested in history, politics, media, literature and language. You have the perfect scenario to integrate cultural competency into your language classroom. Join a session where we will explore the interaction between language and other subjects to advance students cultural competency. Using international relations as an academic background and World War II as a thematic unit, we will discuss teaching strategies to help students comprehend information from an interdisciplinary approach and to develop skills such as creativity, collaboration and critical thinking that also promote cultural competency among language learners. Student projects and other material will be available.
